Job Summary

HAMPTON ROADS AREA

Provide direct care services in the private homes of individuals with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities and/or other assistance with activities of daily living, to include but not limited to: bathing, toileting, preparing meals, hygiene, house appointments. Accompany on community outings/events/recreational activities/appointments. Implements the Individuals’ health and safety in the home and/or community. Makes recommendations based on the participant’s needs.

Responsibilities and Duties

DSP will assist with ADL’s and IADL’s based on the Individuals service plan.
DSP will assist with transporting individual outings.

Qualifications and Skills

• High School Diploma or GED or 5 to 8 years of documented and verifiable experience working in the Human Services.
• One to six months experience working with persons with disabilities in a group home, day support, hospital, treatment home setting (preferred).
• Knowledge of Intellectual Developmental Disabilities (IDD), mental health and/or other developmental disabilities.
• Demonstrated skill in working with adults and/or children with disabilities.
• Ability to observe the rights and personal dignity of participants served.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to perform simple math skills.
• Ability to implement and follow policies and procedures.
• Ability to participate in meetings with other professionals.
• Knowledge of simple nursing care, first aid, behavior management, personal care, hygiene and environmental hygiene.
• Ability to teach participants eating, bathing, dressing, grooming and other self care skills.
• Ability to participate in treatment planning, implement ISP and complete proper documentation.
• Ability to observe, record and properly report participant’s behavior, attitude, physical condition and emergency incidents.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with participants, family members and professional contacts.
• CPR and First Aid must be current
• Current TB screening
• Must be able to pass Federal and State Agency Background Checks
• Non-Violent Crisis Prevention (CPI) Behavior Management (training available if hired)
